AI Superpower

Updated May 20, 2026

The AI Superpower lets your app generate, analyze, summarize, and categorize text and images using an AI model you choose. What sets this apart from wiring up AI yourself: Teacher Hive keeps your provider key on our servers, never written into your app where anyone using it could see it, and your daily spending cap means a runaway app or curious student can't drain your account. When you build the app, paste the AI Instructions into your AI coder (Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini). That tells it to route AI calls through Teacher Hive using your stored key, instead of baking one into your app.

What you can build

  1. Tutoring feedback, a student types an answer, the AI explains what's right, what's wrong, and what to try next.
  2. Story starters, generate fresh writing prompts at the press of a button.
  3. Reading-level checks, paste in a passage, AI returns a grade-level estimate and complexity notes.
  4. Image generators, type a description, AI returns an illustration.
  5. Photo OCR and analysis, upload a photo, AI reads text or describes what it sees.
  6. Classifiers, "sort these responses by attitude" or "find the equation in this image."

The two modes

When you turn on the AI Superpower, you pick one of two modes. They look almost identical to your app's visitors. The difference is who pays the AI bill.

  1. Use My AI Key, your AI key powers the app for everyone who opens it. You set a daily dollar cap. Best for apps you share with students.
  2. Use Their AI Key, each guest pastes their own AI key when they open the app. The key stays on their device. You don't pay for AI. Best for apps you share with other teachers.

Which AI services work

Teacher Hive supports three AI services. Each requires its own API key you get from the provider's site.

  1. Anthropic (Claude), text and vision. No image generation.
  2. OpenAI (GPT and DALL-E), text, image generation, vision input.
  3. Google Gemini (free or paid tier), text, image generation (paid tier only), vision input.

Connect any one of these to start. Add more later if you want to switch between them per app.

Privacy

Teacher Hive apps must never collect student names, IDs, or other personally identified information. The AI Superpower follows the same rule. Don't include student-identifying information in prompts. Use anonymous aliases, codes, or just the student's work itself.

A note about previews. When your app uses a Superpower, the preview in your AI chatbot (Claude's Canvas, ChatGPT's Canvas, Gemini's Canvas) won't show the Superpower working. The Superpower only connects when the app is hosted on Teacher Hive. Paste the code into the Add App form and test it on Teacher Hive.
