Land for Loyalty: Japan Edition

Turn your feudal Japan lesson into a whole-class strategy game. Students are divided into four rival clans, each led by a randomly drawn daimyo, while the teacher plays the shogun. Clans choose a family crest (mon) and one of eight domains, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, then compete to become the most powerful and honorable clan in Japan.

Each game draws one of five real shoguns from Japanese history: Minamoto no Yoritomo, Hōjō Tokimune, Ashikaga Takauji, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, or Tokugawa Ieyasu. Each shogun has his own historical portrait, ruling style, and standing rule, and each era ends in a real crisis, from the Mongol invasions and the kamikaze storms to the Battle of Sekigahara. Every round, clans respond to domain events, obey or defy the shogun’s orders, negotiate during Council Time, choose to attack, defend, or farm, and draw fortune cards. Four progress bars (Rice, Army, Honor, Land) show each clan’s standing at a glance, and the game handles all the math.

A built-in debrief connects the game to the lesson: comparing Japanese and European feudalism, the emperor’s title versus the shogun’s real power, bushido and chivalry, and why the Mongols’ failure to conquer Japan let its feudal system last for centuries.
