EdTech Trust Check was designed with California K–12 requirements and guidance in mind while remaining useful for schools and districts anywhere. The review considers federal requirements such as FERPA and COPPA, California student privacy protections including SOPIPA and Education Code §49073.1, and current California Department of Education guidance for responsible AI use.
California’s approach informed the tool’s stronger review of student-data use, AI model training, advertising and profiling, retention and deletion, human oversight, transparency, vendor agreements, and parent/student rights.
The tool also reflects principles in California’s 2026 Model Policy for Artificial Intelligence in Education, including privacy by design, restrictions on using student data to train public AI models or advertising systems, transparency around AI-driven data collection, and appropriate human oversight.
EdTech Trust Check is a first-pass review tool, not legal advice or formal vendor approval. Results should be considered alongside your district’s policies, data privacy agreement process, cybersecurity review, and legal guidance.
